Developing Technologies
Pac-Wind has developed a high-capacity, Savonius-type wind turbine for use in low-wind regions where the expensive, high-energy HAWTs are not appropriate. We are currently developing a new technology that will increase the efficiency of our VAWT in all wind conditions.
Our current design, being a Savonius-style turbine, is drag dominated. The Savonius airfoil and blade configuration is notorious for starting up in low wind conditions. They are often used as ancillary turbines that are attached to Darrieus type rotors in order to accelerate the latter through negative torque tangential speed ratio (TSR) values on the way to achieving self-sustaining torques.
Research Fellow
Dr. Scott Eberhardt
Aerodynamic lift will become important in our continuing development. Dr. Scott Eberhardt, Associate Professor at the University of Washington's College of Engineering, Aeronautics and Astronautics, is an important asset for Pac-Wind in understanding airfoil design in our turbine blades. Scott is an expert in lift dynamics and a prolific researcher. His biography and publications can be perused at the following links:

A Physical Description of Flight
One of our areas of research is to develop vertical axis turbines which achieve high TSRs. These will employ Darrieus-type blades and develop coefficient of performances greater than 45%.
Sea Power
A unique use for these omni-directional, vertical axis turbines is in ocean shores and rivers, where wave action and water movement provide constant energy. Pac-Wind is now developing technology that will allow the turbines to be submerged and used to harness this plentiful source of power.

Hydrogen Power
Hydrogen is one of the sources of energy that could replace the combustion of fossil fuels as one of our planet's primary power sources.
Pac-Wind is developing several products that utilize electrolysis to produce hydrogen and oxygen gas. These products will be used in the automotive industry and in the consumer market.
